Do you find nano products in nature?
Nano can be found everywhere in nature – almost every living creature has nanostructures.
They give many plants their stability and they are also responsible for a butterfly’s iridescent colors. Stardust, volcano eruptions, marine organisms – natural nanoparticles are a permanent part of our environment.

The iridescent colors of butterflies’ or bugs’ wings are caused by the light reflection on nanostructures – not by pigments (see Fig. 1). The dirt-repelling surface of plant leaves (lotus effect) is also based on their micro and nanostructures (see Fig. 2). In diatoms, because of its arrangement, silica creates maximum stability with an extremely low weight (see Fig. 3). Among other things, nanotechnology tries to imitate these structures (nanobionics).
